Enjoy gourmet growth with Barnie's Coffee

Building on its 24 year history, Barnies Coffee & Tea Co. has grown into the largest privately-owned gourmet coffee and tea purveyor in the US.

Traditionally a mall-based concept, Barnie's Coffee has launched a new national and international franchisee expansion programme and developed its concept for non-mall locations.

"Our passion for quality and service has established Barnie's Coffee as the premium brand of gourmet coffee throughout the world," comments franchise director Mike Daigle. "Barnie's Coffee has built up a loyal and passionate customer base and a proven track record of offering the world's finest hand selected gourmet coffee beans. Our extensive selection of gourmet coffee blends is flavoured and decaffeinated in light, medium and dark roasts to satisfy every discriminating taste bud.

"We have developed a winning concept over 24 years, yet the concept is as fresh, dynamic and exciting as if it were brand new. We've recently decided to add to our existing base of franchisees, some of whom have been in operation for nearly 20 years, and we are now offering opportunities for franchises worldwide."

Barnie's Coffee stores are typically 1,200 to 2,000 square feet, although smaller or larger stores are an option. "Stores are usually located in upscale malls, outdoor lifestyle centres or downtown business districts," Daigle describes. "The immediate surrounding area is typically densely populated, has significant traffic and is highly visible from passing traffic."

Barnie's Coffee is seeking individuals or groups in Europe to become area development or master franchisees and lead its growth through the development of multiple stores. "After building their own stores, master franchisees can also sub-franchise within their own territory," adds Daigle. "While our master franchise programme is focused on the establishment of Barnie's Coffee retail stores in the territory, we may also allow the master franchisee to fully develop the product, the brand and the concept in the territory. Examples of additional use of the brand within a territory include placing Barnie's Coffees and other branded products on the shelves in supermarkets; wholesaling to restaurants and offices that brew coffee; working with national airlines to be the in-flight coffee; and participating, through our website, in mail order and e-commerce sales.

"There are numerous opportunities for the master franchisee and its sub-franchisees to 'be' Barnie's Coffee within the region, and not just with the retail store concept. Our focus with expansion is a multi-pronged development strategy so that the brand can be properly and fully exploited by the master franchisee in the territory."

As well as use of the brand name, trademarks, recipes, access to marketing materials, operational systems and methods and décor, Barnie's Coffee commits to providing franchisees with site selection and lease negotiation assistance; facility planning on site location and architectural design, and corporate training for assistant store managers. "By following our store opening timeline and utilising the experience of our franchise coordinators, we can facilitate the opening of a Barnie's Coffee store within three to five months of signing a franchise agreement," Daigle reveals. "Franchisee and staff training takes place at our Orlando headquarters and training stores for approximately two weeks, including in-store and classroom instruction. To ensure our franchisees are fully prepared for their opening we place no limit on the number of employees that can be brought to this training.

"Prior to opening, a franchise coordinator assists in setting up final inspections, last minute training for new hires and the grand opening."

Barnie's Coffee is launching its search for master franchisees in all European markets, with hands-on candidates with multi-unit ambitions sought to establish the concept in new markets. "Market experience is beneficial, but not critical," points out Daigle. "What is more important is passion for the product and for customer service. Our extensive support infrastructure, developed over two decades, will position our franchisees to develop a world-leading gourmet coffee and tea brand with a host of additional market opportunities to explore."
